Characteristics of the USB Analog Input Module

LucidControl USB Analog Input Module

The LucidControl USB analog input module is designed and developed in order to measure analog voltage can current signals. It belongs to the USB analog input and output group of LucidControl USB IO Modules.
It converts the analog input signals to its equivalent digital value for further processing. E.g in automation systems.
The LucidControl USB analog input module is configured to provide 4 analog channels with 0-5V, 0-10V or 0-24V input ranges. An option with 4-20mA current inputs is available.
The USB analog input modules are also available for negative input ranges so that it is also possible to acquire voltages of e.g. ±10V.
The analog input module has a typical accuracy of 0.25% by using a high ADC resolution of 12 bit which is suitable for many measurement and monitoring applications. It is a very good compromise between accuracy and costs.

USB Analog Input Module Signal Processing

USB Analog Input Unit Signal Connections

USB analog input modules can be used in order to interact with applications which support a 0-10V interface.

These interfaces are very common in automation industry and the building facility sector. Many peripherals are available for this standard interface. Flow meters and pressure sensors are only two examples of devices delivering 0-10V, 0-5V or 0-24V output signals which is e.g. proportional to the measured value.

Analog input measurement devices can interface with the versatile LucidControl USB Analog Input Module. Furthermore, 4-20mA interfaces are used in noisy environment and also when data should be transmitted loss-free over long distances.

While a voltage applied to a transmission line can cause a voltage drop on the line which leads to a measurement error, current loops avoid this problem by sourcing a current instead a voltage. The current, flowing through a resistor parallel to the clamps of the USB analog input module, causes a voltage drop proportional to the sourced current across the resistor. The loss of the transmission line can be neglected and the voltage measured by the USB analog input module is highly accurate.

Advantages of the Analog Input Modules

In addition to the mentioned characteristics of the USB analog input module, LucidControl products have lots of features making them unique.

Firstly, they are working immediately after they are connected to the USB port of any computer. They support Microsoft Windows operating systems as well as Linux and there is no need for specific drivers and most computers have the driver software already installed.

LucidControl USB IO modules are also running on different computer hardware. Beside of standard devices like Laptops and Desktop computers, all LucidControl modules work together with embedded computers as they are represented by the Raspberry Pi and the TI Beagle Bone Black.

You can connect the LucidControl USB analog input module to them and start your data acquisition application.Logging of measurement data into a robust professional database system like MySQL can be realized without trouble is a minimum of development time. The USB analog input module is also best suited for mobile applications because there are no adapters or power supplies necessary to operate a LucidControl IO module.

LucidControl IO modules come by standard with reliable and industrial prepared terminal connectors. The terminals are removable and cables can be fitted by tightening the skew of each contact terminal. A professional housing which enables you to attach the module an DIN-Rails and to mount it in a switch cabinet. This completes the functionality and makes LucidControl the best choice for your professional automation projects. In the factory as well as at home.

The USB analog input module acquires 4 analog voltage or current channels and it is available for the input ranges: 0-5V, 0-10V and 0-24V as well as a current option with 0-20mA range.
Optionally, the USB Analog Input Modules are also available for the negative input voltages: ±5V, ±10V and ±24V.

All analog input channels provide additional signal conditioning and by oversampling the accuracy and resolution can be increased.

Typical application are 0-10V and 4-20mA interfaces.

The modules are typically used in order to measure DC voltages and currents or nearly static signals. Especially the 0-10V option of the USB Analog Input Module is ideally suited to process signals generated by 0-10V outputs as they are wide-spread in the automation and building sector. Wind sensors for example generate a 0-10V signal proportional to the wind speed.

The USB Analog Input Module can measure this and forward the data to the connected computer. In combination with the AO4 – USB Analog Output Module, which provides 4 analog voltage outputs, a reliable transmission of measurement data can be realized by using the 0-10V interface. In order to build a high reliable long distance transmission line, it is recommended to use a 4-20mA interface instead of a voltage signal. The current output option of the USB Analog Output Module generates currents in the range of 4-20mA and eliminates the influence of the line during the transmission. In combination with the 0-20mA input module reliable and interference-free transmission lines can be realized.

All LucidControl USB IO Modules are available with galvanic USB isolation.

All LucidControl are power supplied by USB and do not need additional power supply. LucidControl modules are easy to install and start working immediately after set up.

The USB analog input modules are compatible with Windows, Linux, Raspberry Pi and Beagle Bone
LucidControl provides drivers for all major operating systems.

Command line tools and APIs for Windows and Linux are available, the API is compatible with .NET, Java and Python.
